Background
The number of separable cognitive dimensions in schizophrenia has been debated. Guided by the extant factor analytic literature, the NIMH Measurement and Treatment Research to Improve Cognition in Schizophrenia (MATRICS) initiative selected seven cognitive domains relevant to treatment studies in schizophrenia: speed of processing, attention/vigilance, working memory, verbal learning, visual learning, reasoning and problem solving, and social cognition. These domains are assessed in the MATRICS Consensus Cognitive Battery (MCCB). The aim of this study was to conduct a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) of the beta battery of the MCCB to compare the fit of the MATRICS consensus seven-domain model to other models in the current literature on cognition in schizophrenia.
MethodUsing data from 281 schizophrenia outpatients, we compared the seven correlated factors model with alternative models. Specifically, we compared the 7-factor model to (a) a single-factor model, (b) a three correlated factors model including speed of processing, working memory, and general cognition, and (c) a hierarchical model in which seven first-order factors loaded onto a second-order general cognitive factor.
ResultsMultiple fit indices indicated the seven correlated factors model was the best fit for the data and provided significant improvement in model fit beyond the comparison models.
ConclusionsThese results support the assessment of these seven cognitive dimensions in clinical trials of interventions to improve cognition in schizophrenia. Because these cognitive factors are separable to some degree, it is plausible that specific interventions may have differential effects on the domains.

Dendrons and dendrimers containing cyclophosphazenes units in each generation have been synthesised by the convergent route for the first time. We also demonstrate the synthesis of dendrons containing precise numbers of benzyl protected alcohol functionalities.

The tegumental membrane complex of Schistosoma mansoni is the site of interaction between the parasite and the host. The tegument is involved in uptake of many nutrients, but also plays a crucial role in the evasion of the actions of the host immune system. Essential for the success of this evasion is maintaining the integrity of the tegumental membranes. The rate of turnover of phospholipids was investigated by pulse-labelling worms cultured in vitro, followed by additional incubation in the presence of unlabelled substrates. Tegumental membranes were isolated, characterized using antibodies against specific tegumental proteins, and analysed. It was demonstrated that the most prominent fatty acid found in tegumental phospholipids, palmitate, incorporated rapidly into the phospholipid fraction during a 30 min pulse labelling. In a subsequent 20 h chase with unlabelled substrates, the incorporated radioactivity was lost again from the tegumental membrane complex. This high turnover of palmitate was found to be limited to phosphatidylcholine (PC) only. The turnover was due to deacylation/reacylation, and not to the sloughing of membranes as is the case in schistosomula. It is speculated that this rapid turnover of PC in the tegument of adult schistosomes plays a new and important role in the immune evasion by the parasite.

Summary
Introduction
Distribution, diversity and abundance
In North America, woody vines (lianas) of mesic, temperate environments can be found across a wide range of physiognomic regions, from open fields to climax hardwood forests. Within this range, lianas are predominantly associated with the arborescent vegetation of mid- to late-successional sites in eastern deciduous forests. The deciduous forest of eastern North America exhibits a pronounced gradient from south to north of decreasing mean daily temperature and length of growing season, while there is an east-to-west gradient of decreasing precipitation and increasing temperature variation (Figure 9.1). Within these gradients, lianas appear to be most abundant in the southeastern (warmest, highest precipitation) portion of the biome.
The woody vines native to the eastern deciduous forests are taxonomically diverse (Braun, 1950). Duncan (1975) lists a total of 30 genera in 21 families occurring in the southeastern USA (Table 9.1). This diversity for temperate vines is much less than that for vines of tropical ecosystems (Putz, 1984; Putz & Chai, 1987). The pattern of localized dominance for lianas in eastern North America has dramatically changed over the last 100 years with the rapid spread of exotic species such as Lonicera japonica Thunb., Pueraria lobata (Willd.) Owhi, and Celastrus orbiculatus Thunb. (Sasek, 1985; McNab & Meeker, 1987; Patterson, 1973; Wechsler, 1977) and with increasing disturbance resulting from human activities.
The proliferation of vines in a temperate forest involves a variety of factors, many of which are probably species-specific.

We have carried out finite-inductance calculations of the critical current vs, flux(Ic-φ) and voltage vs, flux (V-φ) characteristics of superconducting interferometers with many Josephson junctions (JJ's) in parallel. At least two features of our calculations suggest that interferometers with many junctions, which we call Superconducting QUantum Interference Gratings, or SQUIG's, might be advantageous for the detection of magnetic flux. First, the voltage noise can potentially be reduced significantly as compared to a dc SQUID with the same overall voltage-to-flux transfer coefficient - a feature which might reduce 1/f noise and enhance the magnetic flux sensitivity of both low and high Tc superconducting (HTS) devices. In addition, nonuniformity of the junction critical currents appears to have little adverse effect on the predicted diffraction-grating like enhancement and narrowing of the peaks in the Ic-φcharacteristic, suggesting that flux uniformity, rather that critical current uniformity, is of primary importance.

The tegmen tympani may occasionally be breached by herniation of the temporal lobe with or without dural cover. The clinical presentation may be obvious with CSF otorrhoea but less so with apparent middle ear effusion, CSF rhinnorrhoea, conductive hearing loss, recurrrent meningitis or intracranial sepsis. Diagnosis requires suspicion of the condition, which may be aided by radiological imaging. Surgical repair is to be recommended: various techniques are available but bone enveloped by fascia placed by subtemporal approach is preferred. The features of this problem are highlighted by four cases.

Submucous diathermy of the inferior turbinates is a widely practised procedure. Three cases are presented in which surgery was complicated by avascular necrosis of the turbinate bone. Each patient required a debridement procedure before healing and recovery of normal mucociliary function could take place.

Segregations of compact chlorite from ultramafic belts in New South Wales have been examined using chemical, X-ray, differential thermal, and electronprobe techniques. The chlorites vary from pennine to sheridanite. Some segregations occupy the central zone in metasomatic sequences of altered chromite, chlorite, and lizardite; but others may have formed at junctions of serpentinite and rodingite.

Of the many important developments in space astronomy during the past three years perhaps the most dramatic was the voyage of the Mariner II which passed less than 35 000 km from the surface of the planet Venus on 14 December 1962 and from which valuable measurements were made of the mass and magnetic field of Venus of the structure of its atmosphere and of conditions in the interplanetary medium. A second event of great importance to solar physics was the successful launching in March 1962 of the first of NASA’s Orbiting Solar Observatories’ the first satellite to be especially designed as a stabilized platform for solar observation. Six additional satellites in this series are planned between 1964 and 1966. Striking advances in the range and quality of rocket solar spectra have also been achieved. Soft X-ray spectra have been photographed to a short-wave limit of 13·8Å and the resolving power at longer wavelengths has been improved by as much as a factor of 10.
